What is MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)?






Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a type of bacteria that is resistant to several antibiotics, including methicillin and other beta-lactam antibiotics such as penicillin and cephalosporins. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a common bacterium that is often found on the skin and in the nose of healthy individuals. While S. aureus can cause minor skin infections or other localized infections in healthy people, MRSA infections can be more difficult to treat because they do not respond to many commonly used antibiotics.

Compromised immune system: Individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS, cancer, or certain chronic medical conditions, are at increased risk of MRSA infection.


Recent antibiotic use: Prior use of antibiotics, particularly broad-spectrum antibiotics, can disrupt the normal balance of bacteria on the skin and mucous membranes, increasing the risk of MRSA colonization or infection.

MRSA infections are typically diagnosed through laboratory testing of clinical specimens such as wound swabs, blood cultures, or respiratory specimens. Treatment of MRSA infections can be challenging due to antibiotic resistance, but several antibiotics are available that are effective against MRSA, including vancomycin, daptomycin, linezolid, and others. In some cases, combination therapy or surgical drainage of infected wounds may be necessary to control the infection.

Preventive measures to reduce the risk of MRSA transmission include:Practicing good hand hygiene, including washing hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
Keeping wounds clean and covered until healed.
