What is malaria?

Malaria is a life-threatening mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by parasites of the Plasmodium genus. The disease is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, which are commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions. Malaria is a significant global health challenge, particularly in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and South America.

There are several species of Plasmodium parasites that can cause malaria in humans, but the most severe forms of the disease are caused by Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. When an infected mosquito bites a person, the parasites are transmitted into the bloodstream and travel to the liver, where they mature and reproduce. After leaving the liver, the parasites infect and multiply within red blood cells, leading to the characteristic symptoms of malaria.

The symptoms of malaria typically appear 10 days to four weeks after infection, although in some cases, symptoms may take longer to develop. Common symptoms of malaria include:

Fever: Fever is one of the hallmark symptoms of malaria and is often cyclical, occurring every 48 to 72 hours, depending on the species of Plasmodium parasite involved.


Chills: Chills and shaking are common symptoms of malaria, often accompanying the fever during the acute phase of the illness.


Headache: Headache is a common symptom of malaria and may be severe in some cases.


Muscle and joint pain: Malaria can cause generalized muscle aches and joint pain, which may be exacerbated during fever episodes.


Fatigue: Fatigue and weakness are common symptoms of malaria and may persist even after the fever subsides.


Nausea and vomiting: Some people with malaria may experience nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.


Anemia: Severe malaria can lead to anemia due to the destruction of red blood cells by the parasites.


Jaundice: In severe cases of malaria, the skin and whites of the eyes may appear yellow due to liver dysfunction (jaundice).

In severe cases, malaria can progress rapidly and lead to complications such as cerebral malaria (a severe form of malaria that affects the brain), severe anemia, organ failure, and death, particularly in young children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Diagnosis of malaria is typically made through laboratory tests, such as blood smears or rapid diagnostic tests, which detect the presence of malaria parasites in the blood. Treatment for malaria involves antimalarial medications, which vary depending on factors such as the species of Plasmodium parasite, the severity of the illness, and the presence of drug resistance. Prevention of malaria involves measures to avoid mosquito bites, such as using insect repellent, sleeping under insecticide-treated bed nets, and taking antimalarial medications when traveling to areas where malaria is endemic.
