Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs): ACTs are recommended as the first-line treatment for uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, the most deadly species of malaria parasite. ACTs combine artemisinin derivatives, which rapidly reduce the parasite load, with other antimalarial drugs to prevent the development of resistance.


Chloroquine: Chloroquine was once widely used to treat malaria caused by chloroquine-sensitive strains of Plasmodium parasites. However, due to widespread resistance, chloroquine is no longer effective in many parts of the world and is no longer recommended as a first-line treatment for malaria.


Quinine: Quinine is an older antimalarial drug that is still used in certain cases, particularly for the treatment of severe malaria or when other antimalarial options are not available. Quinine is usually given in combination with other medications to enhance its effectiveness.


Other antimalarial medications: In addition to ACTs, chloroquine, and quinine, other antimalarial medications such as mefloquine, atovaquone-proguanil, and doxycycline may be used for the treatment of malaria in specific situations or in regions with different patterns of drug resistance.


Supportive care: In addition to antimalarial medications, supportive care may be provided to manage symptoms and prevent complications associated with severe malaria. This may include measures such as hydration, treatment of fever and pain, management of complications such as anemia or jaundice, and monitoring for signs of organ dysfunction.


Hospitalization: Severe cases of malaria, particularly those caused by Plasmodium falciparum, may require hospitalization for close monitoring and management of complications. Hospital-based treatment may include intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, oxygen therapy, and intensive care support as needed.


Follow-up and monitoring: After completing treatment for malaria, patients should be monitored closely to ensure that the infection has been cleared and to watch for any signs of relapse or recurrence. Follow-up visits may include blood tests to check for the presence of malaria parasites and to monitor for any complications or side effects of treatment.
